Monthly 5 – Crafty Favorites for May

Monthly 5 | paperislove.com

Hi friends! I’m super excited to be bringing a new series to my YouTube channel and blog called my Monthly 5. At the start of each new month, I’ll share my five favorite crafty items from the previous month. These will be products, papers, stamps, ink colors, blogs, websites, tools, techniques or trends that I’ve been loving and that have been feeding my crafty inspiration. I still have to work out the kinks of being on camera (yikes, it’s not easy!) and learning some new editing techniques, but I wanted to start this now and I’m really excited.

I hope you enjoy it!

I used the Promenade Icons die set, the Promenade stamp set and the Scripty Sayings stamp set. I wanted to create a letter/postcard look, so added a little stamp embellishment in the top right corner and a second sentiment in the return address area.

The “hello” sentiment I used is also from the Fancy Frames set and the little dotted stripe at the bottom is from the Borderlicious stamp set.

Valentine’s Day Love Cards

Hello friends! Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours! Even when I was single (for what seemed like forever haha), I still always enjoyed this day. Any day that is heavy on the card-sending is one for me. And who can’t love a day about love, am I right? Anyhoo, I’m excited to spend a special evening with my boyfriend tonight and get super dressed up for a fancy dinner. But even if you’re staying home in sweatpants (what will ensue shortly after the dinner), I hope you have a fantastic day full of love.

Today I’m sharing some Valentine’s I made over the last month or so. Hope you enjoy! And keep your eyes peeled for a new video coming to my channel tomorrow!

Festive Christmas Wine Tag

Hi friends! I can’t believe Christmas is almost here! I swear it was summer about a week ago. I have to say I’m much more excited for Christmas this year as I’m not working in retail and I’m on a break from graduate school! It’s pretty much like I’m a kid again. Except that I worry about money because I don’t have any. Sad times. But on the bright side, this post is about wine and wine can turn a frown upside down!

So this is more about a wine tag than wine, but you get the gist. 🙂 I’m sharing a fun tag I made using the Paper Smooches Wine Tag Die. This makes it super easy and you could mass-produce a bunch to give as gifts to friends! And then you don’t have to worry about those awkwardly tall bags that no one knows what to do with after Christmas!

kalyn-wine-tag

I used My Mind’s Eye Vintage Christmas paper as well as Papertrey Ink Peaceful Pinecones stamps and dies. I did some rock and roll stamping with the pinecones (first in a medium brown, then in a dark brown) to give them some shadowing and depth. Love the look it achieved! I knew it needed something extra so I added in a gorgeous Zva rhinestone swirl.

And there you have it! Since we’re in the last-minute “danger zone” of gift giving now, wine might just be a great go-to gift. I would certainly accept it. 🙂

Have a fantastic day and thanks so much for stopping by!

Using Scraps On a Card

Hey there! It’s Friday! And nothing could be better than that. Any plans for this weekend? Mine should be fairly low-key and I’m hoping to get some long-procrastinated projects done as well. Here’s hoping!

Today I’m sharing a card I made in which all the patterned papers and cardstock strips were scrap pieces I pulled out of my little scrap dish. My scrap dish is always overflowing, so I try to make one of these “scrap-only” cards every now and then to use some of that stash up.

IMG_1546

Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper

Patterned paper: October Afternoon, My Mind’s Eye

Stamps: The Girls’ Paperie, Lawn Fawn

Buttons: Papertrey Ink

Twine: The Twinery

I’m not one to usually let pieces hang off of my card, but I was in a strict, scraps-as-they-are challenge with myself so I went for it and actually don’t mind it. Once you’ve built up quite a stash of patterned paper and cardstock strips, it’s pretty easy to come up with a few that coorindate to make a card. Add a sentiment and focal point and you’re done!

Have you ever made a scraps-only or mostly-scraps card? I’d love to see it! Feel free to leave a link in the comment section below. 🙂 Now go and have an awesome weekend!

Paper Crafts Magazine May/June 2012

Hi there! Hope you had a great weekend! It was pretty dang hot here on the East Coast, so it was the perfect opportunity to stay inside during the day and get some crafting done. 🙂 Really any opportunity is the perfect opportunity, right?

Today I thought I’d share a super simple card I made for the May/June 2012 issue of Paper Crafts magazine. It was in the feature “Designer Challenge: Feminine & Masculine” where a pair of us had to use the same products from a manufacturer and make a feminine and masculine card. I was paired up with the super sweet and talented Becky Olsen and was assigned the masculine card so here was my take on it using Echo Park’s “Time and Seasons” collection:

IMG_0803

Like I said, super simple (my first draft of this had a branch of leaves on it), but it definitely has that masculine vibe. Even though Father’s Day is long over, I think this would work just fine for a Dad’s birthday. How fun is that newsprint paper from Echo Park? I love it.

This was a really fun challenge and the other card pairings are pretty awesome. Definitely check out the May/June issue here (you can still order it!).

Well that’s it for today! Hope your week is off to a great start and I’ll see you back here this week! Thanks for stopping by.

Love the Planet Earth Day Card

Hey there! We made it to Friday once again! It's funny how I actually feel busier on the weekends than during the week. I think it's knowing that I have the potential to get SO much done that throws me into a bit of a frenzy. I foolishly imagine that I can knock out 20 cards, stay out late with friends, wake up early in the morning, take photos, blog ahead of schedule, finish both a long distance and short speedy run, go shopping and take time to relax. Not sure why I always have such lofty expecations, but at least I end up with some sort of scaled-down version of that weekend plan. And that's just fine with me.

Earlier this week, I made the decision to take an online class from Jessica Sprague called the Art of Digital Design. I just found out about it on Twitter the very last day it was offered (and wouldn't be offered again for another year!) and felt like it was the perfect time to dive in. It's really helping me to uncover some ideas that I had buried under to-do lists and more pressing deadlines. It's also reminding me how refreshing it is to sketch, brainstorm and continue to educate myself. It's a forward push that I really needed and it feels good. And it's only been like 4 days! So, money well spent I'd say.

Anyway, on to today's card! It's certainly not the most popular card-making holiday, but Earth Day is April 22nd in the US. So I made this fun little card using some canvas, a QuicKutz recycling die and a Paper Smooches sentiment stamp:

Supplies

Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper

Patterned paper: Crate Paper, My Mind's Eye

Stamp: Paper Smooches

Die cuts: QuicKutz, Papertrey Ink

I inked and distressed a canvas circle and used a woodgrain paper to add some "natural" elements to the card design.  It said "Earth Day" to me, so I went for it. 🙂

I hope you have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by!

Girly Make a Wish Card

Hey there! So apparently it's Monday again and I have no idea where last weekend went. I had one of those "what did I DO all day?" kind of weekends. The answer, when looking back is that I did a little crafting, a fair amount of running (in the rain and on a trail – two firsts for me!) and read quite a bit. So, all in all it was great; it just went by far too quickly.

Anyhoo, today's project is a girly birthday card using lots of papers from My Mind's Eye's "Alphabet Soup" collection (one of my favorites).

Supplies

Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper

Patterned paper: My Mind's Eye

Ticket: Jenni Bowlin

Stamp: Papertrey Ink

Chipboard/die cut flowers: My Mind's Eye

Mixing patterns is one of my favorite ways to create interest and texture on a project. I love finding just the right color scheme or pattern size to fit when I'm looking for. For this card, it was pretty easy because this paper collection all coordinates and looks great together no matter which patterns you choose to mix.

That's it for today! Here's hoping the week goes by just as quickly as the weekend did! 🙂 Thanks so much for stopping by!
